In Vivo Techniques Academic Course

The in vivo lab animal techniques (IVT) is an intensive EBE training course for Rutgers students to gain proficiency in lab animal rodent concepts and techniques used in research labs. Earner developed hands-on expertise and didactic knowledge in the following topics: • Compassion fatigue, introduction to animal health, identification of signs of disease/distress, common animal health concerns-clinical signs. • Lab animal diseases, health surveillance • Animal handling techniques, animal behavior • Transgenic animals, breeding colony management, genotyping methods, identification • Colony rooms, husbandry requirements and discussion of biosecurity levels (BSL3 practices), gnotobiotics, GLP, IACUC. • Dosing techniques, dosing calculations • Blood collection techniques • Euthanasia and necropsy • Analgesia and anesthesia, controlled substances. • Common principles of surgery, surgical prep, peri-operative monitoring, recovery, and post-operative care; suture patterns and proficiency • Aseptic surgical techniques-1 (Non-survival ovariectomy) • Aseptic surgical techniques-2 (Survival subcutaneous implant)

Earning Criteria

Earner completed a 1-semester, 3-credit undergraduate course with didactic and hands-on content. To receive the badge, the earner had 100% attendance and completed all tasks as assigned throughout the course. This included 5 quizzes, 5 assignments, 10 competency evaluations in class, and 2 summative examinations. Earner also had to demonstrate competency in all hands-on portions and received an overall passing grade in the course.

Course instructors are Lauren Bright, DVM, PhD, DACLAM and Mariel Nigro, Ed.M., LVT, RLATg. Guest lecturers include laboratory animal veterinary residents and veterinarians. Additional hands-on instructors include veterinarians and veterinary technicians with expertise in the field.
